Frequently Asked Questions

1.

What is mineral makeup?

Mineral makeup is a broadly used term that applies to all makeup that is made using minerals. Not all mineral makeup is the same, though. Most of the large commercial mineral brands contain minerals, but they also contain artificial dyes, carmine, and ferric ferrocyanide. Often, their minerals are also micronized, a process that creates nano-sized particles, which have not been properly tested for safety. Our makeup is not just mineral makeup – it's natural mineral makeup. We don't use any artificial dyes or micronized minerals. Does mineral makeup have a best before date?

Our mineral makeup only contains minerals, so there is nothing for bacteria to feed on. Theoretically, this means that it can be stored indefinitely; however, as soon as you start using it, you introduce your own skin oils and bacteria into the mix, so the usual rules apply: it should be used within 2 years.

Our lip glosses and other products that contain non-mineral ingredients do have a best before date. Because we use only natural and organic ingredients, they won't last as long as chemically-preserved products. Here are some general guidelines for after the product has been opened:

Lip Gloss: 6-12 months
Lipstick: 12-18 months
Primer: 3-6 months
Mascara: 3 months

I have rosacea and sensitive skin. Are your products suitable for my skin?

Absolutely! I have rosacea and sensitive skin myself, so I developed my products to be sensitive-skin friendly. I don't use any ingredients that are common irritants such as bismuth oxychloride or silica. Even the brushes are soft and non-irritating. I've always had trouble finding brushes that didn't scratch and irritate my skin, but these don't.

Also, the foundation does an excellent job of covering the redness of rosacea. I usually apply 2-3 light layers of foundation with the powder brush and then go over any red spots with the denser concealer brush. Easy and effective!

My eye shadow doesn't stick/sticks too much. What's going on?

Mineral makeup is very sensitive to the oil balance of your skin. If you find that the shadow is not sticking as much as you would like, it probably means that your skin is on the dry side. To fix this, you can either apply a light moisturizer to your eyelids (making sure to wait until it has absorbed before applying eye shadow) or you can use our eye primer. For an intense look, apply the primer at full strength. For a more natural look, dilute with water and then apply.

If you find that the shadow is sticking too much, it probably means that your skin is on the oily side (or you're trying to apply it at the end of a hot, sticky day). To fix this, you can either wash your face with a mild cleanser or wipe your eyelids gently with a soft face cloth. This will usually leave just enough oil on your lids to make the eye shadow stick and blend nicely.

I've been seeing a lot of handmade makeup companies popping up lately. How do I know I can trust a handmade company?

Cheeky Cosmetics is a legitimate, registered company, which means we are required to follow all legal requirements of a cosmetics company. For example, cosmetics companies are required to submit lists of their ingredients to the federal government. They are also required to list the following information on all products (or on a card accompanying the package if it doesn't fit): ingredients (using INCI names), name and address of manufacturer (city, country, postal code), weight/volume of contents, type of product (eg. blush). Although following the proper regulations does not guarantee the safety of the products, it does show that the owner has gone through the trouble of making the company legitimate and takes safety rules and regulations seriously.

Many companies do not even make their own products - they buy them wholesale from another manufacturer and then resell them with their own name. While there is nothing wrong with private labeling in itself, if a company claims that it makes the product itself, that says a lot about its honesty and integrity.

At Cheeky Cosmetics, we make all of our products from scratch (no pre-made bases are used), which means we know exactly what is going into our products. Our products are also certified vegan and cruelty-free by PETA, which means we are accountable to another organization other than the government. If you have any questions about what's in our products, we would be happy to answer them!
